# Overview

> How Formbricks is built, and the standards its code is held to.

This section is for people working on the Formbricks codebase itself. It documents **how the platform is put together** and **the conventions its code follows** — not how to use Formbricks, which is what the rest of these docs are for.

## What is here

    The architecture: how the Next.js app, the API gateway, the MCP server and the database fit together, and how tenants are kept apart.

  <Card title="Standards" icon="shield" href="/docs/development/standards/organization/file-and-directory-organization">
    How the repository is organised, how code is formatted and named, how errors are handled, and what a review and a test are expected to cover.

## Running Formbricks locally

Setup instructions live with the code, where they stay in step with it:

* [README](https://github.com/formbricks/formbricks#readme) — prerequisites and the steps to get an instance running.
* [CONTRIBUTING.md](https://github.com/formbricks/formbricks/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) — how to raise an issue, and what a good pull request looks like.
* [Open in Gitpod](https://gitpod.io/#https://github.com/formbricks/formbricks) — a configured workspace in the browser, if you would rather not install anything.

If something goes wrong, [GitHub Discussions](https://github.com/formbricks/formbricks/discussions) is the fastest way to get help from people who have hit the same thing.

<Note>
  Looking to **run** Formbricks rather than develop it? See [Self-hosting](/docs/self-hosting/overview).
  Building **against** it? See the [API v2 reference](/docs/api-v2-reference/introduction) and the
  [SDK guides](/docs/surveys/website-app-surveys/framework-guides).
